Sketching the pattern

Tackling the quick pattern sketch across both sides of the heart was a simple, but impactful undertaking today. The hardest part of the process so far has been setting up this projector. It was well worth the effort, though, to see the first glimpse at where this thing is heading – life-size!

Once the projection was set, I was able to cruise through the outlines armed with a pencil and sharpener.

the sketch is in! and @Janelle Monáe has me thinking it’s time for this heart to get a playlist 😍 #paradeofhearts #paradeofheartskc #my5footheart #fyp #womenownedbusiness

To be fair, I’m still on the fence about whether or not the outlines are necessary for this design. I could freehand the chaotic hex shapes without much trouble. If I did, it would save some time and the tedious effort of trying to fit everything to a specific shape. But, that would also run the risk of falling off-course for my ultimate visual goal. The end result would be similar, but less predictable for me to know where it’s landing.

Since I’m going to be working with a lot of materials that I’m unfamiliar with, I’m leaning toward eliminating the unpredictable elements where I can. Thus, the sketch. I know I can make up for unexpected issues by always bringing things back in line with my original design concept…and I’m pretty confident in my ability to do that despite whatever these tools can throw at me. Only time will tell though!
